What Finish Would You Like?

OPTION 1 Red Oxide Primer. This is a no frills finish and the cheapest available option. We apply a single coat of red oxide primer, a form of undercoat, to the metalwork, ready for on site painting in whatever colour you like!

OPTION 2 Red Oxide Primer and Painted In Black. We can offer to fully finish the metalwork by applying a single coat of red oxide primer, allowing it to dry and then applying a single coat of satin matt black paint. We ask that you apply at least one more coat of black paint subsequent to delivery or installation. We cannot state how long this will protect the metalwork from rusting, but it is advisable to touch up at least once a year. Please note this finish is only available if we are carrying out the installation.

OPTION 3 Powder Coated Only. Metalwork can be finished as powder coated only. Although powder coating provides a lovely smooth finish, we tend to discourage a powder coated only finish as the metalwork beneath the powder coating can rust. In addition, powder coating can chip during installation or transport, resulting in exposed metalwork. Once the metalwork rusts or the powder coating chips, it is difficult to re-store as you cannot really paint over a powder coated finish using traditional paint brush methods - it just won't match or look right.

OPTION 4 Galvanised Only. We are able to hot dip galvanise our products to BS EN ISO 1461. Galvanising will stop the metalwork from rusting. Our supplier suggests that galvanising can prevent rust from appear for 40 to 70 years in a UK environment, though we are unable to confirm this or provide a guarantee. Galvanising is usually considered to be an industrial finish and does not always produce a smooth surface. It is silver/grey in colour and is likely to become darker over time as it weathers.

OPTION 5 Galvanised / Hot Zinc and Powder Coated. This is expensive but ultimately one of the best finishes available for metalwork. It combines the benefit of an anti-rust undercoat (i.e. the galvanising/hot zinc) with a lovely smooth powder coated finish.

A Checklist To Help You Choose And Get The Most From Your Steel Fabricator

Call Anytime. Get a Steel Fabricator who you can call whenever you need help and advice! Simple.

Understanding. Select a Steel Fabricator you can speak to about your ideas and who understands what you are saying and who you understand.

Will Visit You. Ask them if they will visit you for a site survey, free of charge. Why do you have to spend time travelling, find parking and wait around for them when they are the one trying to get your business?

Gives You Ideas. Ask them what's best for your project. You want a Steel Fabricator who will pro-actively come up with ideas for your project.

Use of E-mail. Ask if they communicate by e-mail as it speeds up service and saves costs.

Fixed Price. Make sure you get a fixed quote wherever possible for your work. It's the value of what you get that matters and the more experienced Steel Fabricators may charge slightly more but will do the work more quickly and efficiently.

View their Website. To see how pro-active they are and what they offer to clients. If they don't even have one or it's a very poor website, what does that say about the service you're then likely to receive.

Quick Response. Make an enquiry and see how quickly they respond. If they aren't fast now when trying to get your business, what will they be like if you place an order with them?

Who Will You Deal With? Find out who you will be dealing with in the company or will you be passed around lots of different people?

What Services are Offered? Find out if they offer all the services you need and are likely to need in the future?

Existing Clients. Ask to speak with some of their clients to see what they say about them.

Listen or Talk and Take Action? Do they listen to you or mostly talk at you? You want a Steel Fabricator who takes a real interest in you and your project and takes action on what you need. If not, lose them, lose them quick!
